In a foundational study published in this issue of Annals of Neurology, Fernandez-Espejo et al. (A role for the default mode network in the bases of disorders of consciousness. Ann Neurol 72, 335–343 (2012)) report that diagnostic categories of disorders of consciousness can be stratified by diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) of connections among specific components of the default-mode network (DMN).
